Internet Backup

What is Internet Backup?

Internet backup is a new way to do regular, reliable, automated, daily backups.  The backed up data is stored offsite using an external server, located on the internet, as the backup drive.  A client is installed on the machine to be backed up. The client runs in the background and once a day determines which files need t be backed up.  The client then encrypts the data, so that no one else can read it while being transmitted or while stored on the internet hard disk. The server keeps the data, keeps archive versions and provides the saved files when they are needed.

Is Internet Backup secure?

All data is encrypted before being sent over the internet to the server. The biggest concern is not forgetting your password. If you don’t know the password, we won’t be able to help you get your data back. (We don’t even want to know your password.)

Is Internet Backup Fast?

Our Internet backup uses compression to shrink what is sent. It also uses a kind of incremental backup that only sends the data that has changed in bigger files.  Our 7 Gigabyte backup creates about 10 to 20 Megabytes to be backed up everyday.  The compression and incremental backup usually shrink that to about 1 to 3 Megabytes of data sent over the internet. That is a couple of minutes of send time on a broadband connection.  If the daily changes aren’t too big Internet Backup is even appropriate for dial-up internet connections.

Is Internet Backup Reliable?

To be reliable Internet backup does need to be setup right and checked occasionally to insure it is still backing up, and backing up the right stuff. The simplest way to set it up is to make one common backup directory, preferably on a server.  Everyone puts anything that needs to be backed up in the common backup directory, or a sub-directory of the common backup directory. In this case, all you need to check every once in a while is that all the users are putting their files in the common backup directory.  (This check is a part of our standard Flat Rate / Maintenance Agreement.)

The client can also be configured to send an e-mail, or e-mails, to the people that need to check the backup status.  If you like you can send a copy to us.  We’ll monitor it and call you if there seems to be a problem.

Internet Backup can be a good choice to help complete the Protection Triangle.
