Networks – Why One May Be Ideal for Your Business or Home-Office
A network may sound like an unnecessary layer between you and your computers. For some small businesses, it may seem a bit too, um, corporate. And why would a nuclear household (mom and dad, two kids, three computers and a laptop) need a network?
Business
For businesses with at least two computers a network is almost a requirement now a days. Networks can offer businesses, even small businesses, huge advantages:
- Simplify Backup
- Allow office to share one Firewall
- Shared Internet Connections - If you do this right you can pay for one account, get everyone in the office e-mail, save time using the internet and e-mail and still save money.
- Shared Printers
- Share Databases, Documents, and other files in an instant.
- Increase efficiencies
- Save money
At Home
If you have several television sets in your house, you don’t pay for separate cable service for each TV – do you? You link them together to provide economies of service. A similar economy of service is in play when all home computers are networked:
- When linked by the same network, several computers can use the internet at the same time. This is called a Shared Internet Connection;
- Tired of the same old bridge game? A network facilitates person-to-person gaming;
- Give a computer with a small hard drive some extra vroom by networking it to a larger-sized computer;
- If you have a CD burner, a scanner or a laser printer hooked up one computer, using the network these hardware items can be accessed by another computer on the same network. No need to duplicate expensive hardware;
- In some cases, if standard cable networks are not cost-effective, wireless networks may be an acceptable option.
