QuantumStep’s Troubleshooter Checklist

If your computer is acting up, is unresponsive or has crashed -- don’t panic.  Refer to this  Troubleshooter Checklist. Print our  Troubleshooter Checklist out NOW and place it close by at all times. We hide our list under the computer monitor!

Why?

Because you won’t be able to print or even access this list if your computer has already crashed.

  • Backup your files.   If you are able, try to backup your important files now. That includes documents, bank records, address books, databases, et cetera.
  • Turn off your computer. Turn everything off and simply walk away for several minutes. Give you and the machines time to cool down. When you return, turn everything back on.  Sometimes this is all it takes to shake out a few kinks.  If you weren’t able to backup your files before, do it now.
  • Changes? Have you installed any new software or drivers, or changed any settings on the computer.  If so try uninstalling the software or drivers, or restoring the drivers back to their original settings.  If it is related to a driver you want to get help.  Removing essential drivers is bad and sometimes requires special procedures.
  • Unplugged? Okay, it makes a jamming MTV show, but it’s not great if it’s what’s jamming up your system. You want everything plugged in correctly, so unplug your keyboard, mouse, video, power, modem and printer cables.  Then, plug each item back in slowly, surely and correctly. Sometimes, something as innocuous as a three-pound kitten tippy-toeing around the wiring can bring a whole system down.  (Memo to self:  Put the catnip on the other side of the room!)
  • Virus? You could have a virus or worm.  If your computer system is used by several people, there’s no telling whether your system has been contaminated – or for how long. To check, scan your computer over the web by visiting http://housecall.antivirus.com/. This is not a replacement for antivirus software installed on your computer, which we highly recommend, but it should give you an indication whether you have any of the common viruses.
